is hadiya pendleton, 15 years old, she was in washington for the president's inauguration performing her w w her high school as part of the festivities. several days ago back home in chicago this honors student was shot and killed randomly in gang violence that was not directed at her specifically but just gunshots that pierced through a crowd. it was one mile from the president's home in chicago. here's a little bit of what the president had to say at the end of his speech about the victims of gun violence and the legislation that the president is proposing. >> hadiya's parents nate and cleo, are in this chamber tonight along with more than two dozen americans whose lives have been torn apart by gun violence. they deserve a vote. this morning in the murder of chicago honor student hadiya pendleton. two suspected gang members, 189-year-old michael ward and 20-year-old kenneth williams will be in court this morning. there are their mug shot s righ there. police say ward confessed and said she was not the intended target. just days before pendleton had performed at the president's inauguration, michelle obama appeared at the funeral. tonight her parents will be guests at tonight's state of the europe onaddress. ted rowlands has more. what do we know and how did police find them? >> reporter: well, zoraida, how police found them unfortunately wasn't from a tip from the community. they said they were very disappointed in the fact that despite the fact that this case was on the airwaves every single day for almost two weeks and there was a $40,000 reward, dhad not get that tip from a witness. what happened was they just canvassed the neighborhood and picked up little tidbits and were able to narrow down these two and as you said, they got a partial confession from the 18-year-old. >> and we heard that they mistook one of

the parents of 15-year-old hadiya pendleton, killed a week after participating in the presidential inaugural ceremonies in washington d.c. the first lady attended her funeral last saturday in chicago. two men of under arrest in that murder each charged with first degree murder, attempted murder and aggravated battery for not only killing her but wounding two others. police say the men thought they were shooting at a rival gang and not a group of students. the first lady also welcoming 102-year-old desline victor, a haitian immigrant who had a tough time voting in miami. she took two trips to the polls and waited for several hours becoming an inspiration for others to wait in line. she will be representing the need to fix our electoral process. illinois democratic gutierrez is bringing an undocumented immigrant, a father of two a husband fighting to stay in the united states. he was brought here when he was 15 he's been living and working here ever since. we're going to be back with more show after the break. stay with us. as much interest in hadiya pendleton the way she did. she was like, momma, i wanted people to feel how this happened, do you know this is going to happen, and, you know, she just had a lot of questions about life and death, i mean, because all you see around. >> so obviously another tragic murder in the city of chicago highlighting the president's call to end the gun violence, and we should say, craig, when president obama spoke in chicago, he really called for a broad approach to ending the violence, not just through stiffer legislation, but also by investing in communities, investing in early education, investing in families. now, of course, the president is also calling for stiffer gun laws, things like reinstating the ban on assault weapon, limiting high capacity magazines and expanding universal background checks. it is thought that the majority of those proposals are going to have a really tough time getting through congress. however, it appears as though something like universal background checks might have more bipartisan support than some of the other proposals that president
